Bindu (Point of Concentration)

Bindu is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘point’ or ‘dot’ that holds significant meaning in yoga philosophy and practice. Conceptually, it represents the point of concentrated energy, consciousness, or focus that serves as a gateway between the physical and subtle dimensions.

In meditation practices, bindu refers to:

  • A focal point for concentration (dharana)
  • The third eye center (ajna chakra) where awareness is directed
  • The seed point from which manifestation emerges
  • The junction between individual consciousness and universal consciousness

Visually, the bindu is represented as a dot, often placed at the center of yantras (sacred geometric designs) like the Sri Yantra. This symbolizes both the origin point of creation and the destination of meditative absorption.

In Tantric traditions, bindu is associated with bindu visarga, a subtle energy center located at the back of the head where divine consciousness is said to reside. Advanced meditation practices aim to awaken and direct energy from lower centers up to this point.

For yoga practitioners, understanding bindu offers practical applications in concentration techniques, visualization practices, and as a conceptual framework for understanding how focused attention can transform consciousness and perception. The concept reminds us that infinite potential can exist within a single point of focused awareness.
