Granthis in yoga philosophy are psychic knots or energy blockages in the subtle body that obstruct the free flow of prana (life force) through the central energy channel (sushumna nadi). The concept comes from Tantric and Kundalini yoga traditions where three main granthis are identified each associated with a major chakra.
The three primary granthis are: Brahma Granthi (located at the muladhara chakra at the base of the spine) which represents attachment to physical pleasures and material existence; Vishnu Granthi (at the heart chakra) relating to emotional attachments and ego-based relationships; and Rudra Granthi (at the ajna chakra between the eyebrows) connected to spiritual attachments and intellectual pride.
In yoga practice untying these knots is essential for spiritual awakening and allowing kundalini energy to rise unimpeded through the chakras. Various practices including asana pranayama meditation and mantra recitation are utilized to release these blockages. When the granthis are pierced or dissolved consciousness expands and spiritual insights arise.
Working with granthis requires patience consistent practice and often guidance from an experienced teacher as the process involves deep psychological and energetic transformation that can sometimes bring challenging emotions to the surface.
