Manipura Chakra, commonly known as the Solar Plexus Chakra, is the third energy center in the yogic chakra system. Located in the upper abdomen, around the navel and solar plexus region, this powerful energy center governs personal power, will, confidence, and transformation. The Sanskrit word “manipura” translates to “city of jewels,” suggesting the radiant, lustrous quality of this chakra.
In traditional yoga philosophy, Manipura is visualized as a bright yellow lotus flower with ten petals. Its element is fire (agni), which symbolizes transformation, energy, and heat. The seed sound or bija mantra associated with this chakra is “RAM.” When properly balanced, Manipura Chakra provides a sense of purpose, personal power, and the confidence to meet life’s challenges.
Physiologically, this energy center corresponds to the digestive system, pancreas, adrenal glands, and the upper abdominal region. According to yogic tradition, a balanced Manipura supports healthy digestion, metabolism, and energy distribution throughout the body. It’s considered the body’s energy reservoir, storing and distributing prana (life force).
On a psychological level, Manipura relates to self-esteem, personal boundaries, autonomy, and executive function. When this chakra is balanced, individuals feel confident in their abilities, make decisions with clarity, and maintain healthy boundaries. An underactive Solar Plexus Chakra may manifest as low self-esteem, indecisiveness, and difficulty standing up for oneself. Conversely, an overactive Manipura might express as domineering behavior, excessive competitiveness, or anger issues.
Yoga practices that balance Manipura include core-strengthening poses like Boat Pose (Navasana), twisting postures that massage the abdominal organs, and heat-building practices like Kapalabhati pranayama. Meditation focusing on the solar plexus region while visualizing bright yellow light or repeating the mantra “RAM” can also help harmonize this energy center.
