Osho

Osho (1931-1990) born Chandra Mohan Jain and formerly known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh was a controversial Indian spiritual teacher who developed a distinctive approach to meditation personal transformation and spirituality that continues to influence certain branches of modern yoga and meditation.

His teachings synthesized elements from various spiritual traditions including Hinduism Buddhism Taoism Christianity Sufism and Western psychology. Osho emphasized the importance of meditation awareness celebration and the integration of opposites—particularly spirituality and material enjoyment which differed from more ascetic approaches to yoga.

Osho created numerous active meditation techniques designed specifically for contemporary practitioners including Dynamic Meditation Kundalini Meditation and Nadabrahma. These methods often involve vigorous movement cathartic expression and emotional release followed by periods of stillness and witnessing—addressing what he saw as modern humanity’s accumulated tensions and repressions.

His approach to yoga focused less on traditional asana practice and more on using movement to prepare the body for meditation. He viewed the body as a gateway to spiritual experience rather than an obstacle emphasizing the importance of physical vitality and pleasure in spiritual life.

While controversial for his unconventional views on sexuality social norms and religion Osho’s influence can be seen in contemporary yoga’s emphasis on emotional release inner freedom and the integration of mindfulness into everyday life.
