Waterfall Pose

Waterfall Pose or Viparita Karani is a gentle inverted posture that offers many benefits of inversions without the intensity of headstand or shoulderstand. Often called ‘Legs Up the Wall’ this restorative pose involves lying on the back with legs extended vertically resting against a wall or supported in the air. The position creates a gentle reversal of gravitational effects on the body.

This accessible inversion promotes venous return improving circulation throughout the lower extremities and reducing swelling in feet and ankles. It provides gentle relief for tired legs making it ideal after long periods of standing walking or traveling. The pose passively stretches hamstrings calves and lower back while giving the heart a subtle break from pumping against gravity.

Waterfall Pose activates the parasympathetic nervous system inducing deep relaxation and making it excellent for stress reduction and preparation for sleep. Many practitioners report improved digestion reduced menstrual discomfort and relief from mild headaches with regular practice. Unlike active inversions it can generally be held for extended periods—from 5 to 20 minutes—allowing time for the body’s systems to respond to the inverted position.

Practitioners with certain conditions including glaucoma uncontrolled high blood pressure or recent eye surgeries should consult healthcare providers before practicing. Modifications include using props like bolsters or folded blankets under the hips or practicing with legs in butterfly position against the wall for those with tighter hamstrings or lower back sensitivity.
