Dharmachakra

Dharmachakra (pronounced dhar-ma-CHAHK-ra) is a sacred symbol in yoga and Buddhist traditions representing the ‘Wheel of Dharma’ or the ‘Wheel of Law.’ The term combines two Sanskrit words: ‘dharma’ meaning cosmic law truth or righteous path and ‘chakra’ meaning wheel or circle. This ancient symbol depicts an eight-spoked wheel that carries profound philosophical and spiritual significance.

The Dharmachakra symbolizes Buddha’s first teaching (the Four Noble Truths) and the Noble Eightfold Path with each spoke representing one aspect of the path to enlightenment. In yoga philosophy the wheel signifies the cyclical nature of existence the continuous flow of cosmic order and the journey toward spiritual realization. The center hub represents discipline and meditation while the rim symbolizes mindfulness that holds everything together.

In yoga practice the Dharmachakra inspires the concept of movement with balance. Just as a wheel functions optimally when perfectly balanced yogis strive to balance opposing forces within themselves. Some yoga postures like Dharmachakra Mudra (a hand gesture) directly reference this symbol by forming a circular shape with the hands that represents teaching and the transmission of spiritual knowledge.

Visualizing or meditating upon the Dharmachakra reminds practitioners that yoga is a continuous journey of evolution much like a wheel in constant motion. This symbol encourages yogis to maintain steady progress on their path while remaining centered amidst life’s perpetual changes.
