Intention

Intention or Sankalpa in Sanskrit is a fundamental concept in yoga practice that involves setting a conscious direction or purpose for one’s practice and by extension one’s life. Unlike casual wishing an intention in yoga represents a heartfelt resolve or determination that aligns with one’s deepest values and aspirations.

At the beginning of yoga sessions practitioners often take a moment to cultivate intention during the initial centering period. This might involve asking oneself why one has come to the mat that day and what quality or energy one wishes to cultivate. Common intentions include practicing with compassion finding balance cultivating gratitude or dedicating the practice to someone in need.

Intentions differ from goals in that they focus on the present moment and inner qualities rather than future outcomes. While a goal might be to master a particular asana an intention might be to practice with self-acceptance regardless of what happens. This distinction helps shift practitioners from achievement-oriented thinking to process-oriented awareness.

In yogic philosophy intention is understood to have creative power. The Upanishads state ‘You become what you think’ recognizing how our focused attention shapes our experience and reality. Modern neuroscience supports this through studies on neuroplasticity showing how repeated thoughts create neural pathways that influence perception and behavior.

Setting intentions helps bridge the gap between physical yoga practice and daily life. By consciously choosing qualities to embody on the mat practitioners develop the awareness to bring these same qualities into everyday situations transforming yoga from isolated exercise into a continuous practice of mindful living.

Advanced practitioners may work with more profound spiritual intentions such as seeking self-realization serving others or awakening universal consciousness. These deeper sankalpas serve as north stars guiding one’s spiritual journey through various life circumstances.
