Kapalabhati

Kapalabhati is a powerful Pranayama technique often translated as “Skull Shining Breath” or “Frontal Brain Cleansing Breath.” This energizing breathing exercise consists of short forceful exhalations through the nose followed by passive inhalations.

In Sanskrit kapala means “skull” and bhati means “shining” or “illuminating.” This practice is believed to clear the frontal lobes and sinuses while invigorating the entire body. It’s considered both a Pranayama exercise and a cleansing kriya (internal cleansing technique).

During Kapalabhati the practitioner sits in a comfortable meditation posture with spine erect. The breath cycle involves active sharp exhales created by quickly contracting the lower abdomen while allowing inhalations to occur passively and naturally. Typically performed in rounds of 30-60 breaths followed by deep breathing.

Benefits of regular Kapalabhati practice include:

  • Increased oxygen levels and improved circulation
  • Enhanced mental clarity and focus
  • Stimulation of abdominal organs
  • Strengthened respiratory system
  • Removal of toxins
  • Balanced nervous system

As an intermediate to advanced technique beginners should approach Kapalabhati gradually under qualified guidance. It’s contraindicated during pregnancy menstruation high blood pressure heart conditions vertigo or recent abdominal surgery. The practice culminates with relaxation allowing the energetic effects to integrate fully.
