Lion Pose

Lion Pose or Simhasana is a dynamic and expressive yoga posture that mimics the fierce countenance of a lion. The Sanskrit “simha” means “lion” and this pose embodies the majestic animal’s power confidence and fearlessness.

In this seated posture practitioners typically kneel with the buttocks resting on the heels though variations can be performed in a cross-legged position. The hands are placed on the knees with fingers spread wide like lion’s paws. The defining element comes in the facial expression: eyes wide open gaze directed upward or to the third eye tongue extended out and down while exhaling forcefully through the mouth with a “ha” sound.

Beyond its unusual appearance Lion Pose offers numerous therapeutic benefits. The stretching of the face throat and chest helps release tension in areas where many people unconsciously hold stress. The pose stimulates the platysma muscle (a broad sheet of muscle in the neck) and the muscles around the eyes improving facial circulation and potentially reducing signs of aging.

Simhasana is particularly beneficial for the throat and vocal cords making it helpful for those who use their voice professionally such as teachers singers or public speakers. The forceful exhalation clears the respiratory passages and can help alleviate conditions like sore throat or recurring tonsillitis.

On an energetic level Lion Pose is considered excellent for releasing inhibitions and pent-up emotions. It encourages practitioners to express themselves freely moving beyond social constraints and fear of judgment. This makes it both physically and psychologically liberating.
