Nadis are the subtle energy channels in the yogic body through which prana (life force) flows. According to traditional yoga anatomy the human body contains a vast network of these channels—72000 in total—with three primary nadis forming the central energetic structure of the subtle body.
The most important nadi is the Sushumna which runs from the base of the spine to the crown of the head through the central axis of the spinal column. It’s flanked by Ida and Pingala nadis which spiral around Sushumna like a double helix. Ida corresponds to lunar feminine cooling energy (left side) while Pingala carries solar masculine warming energy (right side).
When these nadis become blocked energy cannot flow freely resulting in physical mental and emotional imbalances. Many yoga practices including pranayama (breath control) asana (physical postures) and specific mudras (gestures) aim to purify and balance these energy channels.
Advanced yogic practices like Kriya Yoga and Kundalini Yoga work directly with the nadis to awaken spiritual energy. When the three main nadis are purified and kundalini energy can rise through Sushumna states of higher consciousness become accessible.
Each nadi connects to specific chakras (energy centers) creating an integrated energetic system. By understanding the nadi system yoga practitioners gain insight into the subtle influences affecting their health vitality and spiritual development allowing for more targeted practices to address specific imbalances.
