Namaskara

Namaskara is a traditional yogic gesture of reverence and greeting deeply embedded in yoga practice and Indian culture. The term derives from Sanskrit: “namah” meaning “bow” or “adoration” and “kara” meaning “doing” or “action”—literally “I bow to you.”

The physical expression of Namaskara involves bringing the palms together at the heart center (Anjali Mudra) with fingers pointing upward and thumbs resting lightly against the sternum. This gesture symbolizes the meeting of individual consciousness with universal consciousness—the recognition that the divine essence within oneself is the same that exists in others.

In yoga classes Namaskara bookends the practice beginning with an acknowledgment of the sacred space and ending with gratitude for the shared experience. When performed with mindfulness it transforms from a mere gesture into a powerful meditation that centers awareness in the heart and cultivates humility.

Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation) and Chandra Namaskara (Moon Salutation) are sequences named for this concept of reverent greeting—offering respect to the solar and lunar energies. These dynamic movements embody the spirit of Namaskara through the entire body expressing reverence through motion.

Beyond its physical form Namaskara represents yoga’s ethical foundation reminding practitioners that recognition of our shared divinity naturally leads to compassionate action. The gesture creates an energetic circuit connecting heart centers and establishing a field of mutual respect essential for authentic yoga practice.
