Neti

Neti is one of the six purification practices (Shatkarmas) in Hatha Yoga designed specifically for cleansing the nasal passages and sinuses. The term comes from Sanskrit and refers to the removal of impurities and blockages from the upper respiratory tract. Two primary forms exist: Jala Neti (using water) and Sutra Neti (using a cotton string or catheter).

Jala Neti the more commonly practiced form involves pouring lukewarm saline water through one nostril and allowing it to exit through the other using a specialized pot called a “neti pot.” This gentle irrigation clears mucus allergens and pollutants while moistening the nasal membranes. The practice should always use sterilized water with the appropriate salt concentration to match the body’s natural salinity.

Sutra Neti involves carefully inserting a waxed cotton string through the nose and drawing it out through the mouth. This advanced technique provides deeper cleansing and stimulation of the nasal passages but requires proper training to perform safely.

Regular practice of Neti offers numerous benefits including relief from nasal congestion allergies sinusitis and respiratory infections. It improves breathing capacity essential for pranayama (yogic breathing exercises) and helps prevent the accumulation of dust and allergens in the respiratory tract. Many practitioners report enhanced sensory perception particularly regarding the sense of smell.

Beyond physical benefits Neti is believed to stimulate important nerve endings in the nasal passage influencing brain function. According to yogic texts regular practice helps balance the activities of the right and left brain hemispheres promoting mental clarity and creating favorable conditions for meditation by clearing subtle energy pathways related to breathing and consciousness.
