Netra Vyayamam

Netra Vyayamam refers to a specialized set of yogic eye exercises designed to strengthen vision maintain ocular health and relieve eye strain. The term derives from Sanskrit with “netra” meaning “eye” and “vyayamam” meaning “exercise.” These practices have gained renewed relevance in our digital age when prolonged screen time places unprecedented demands on visual function.

The practice typically includes several distinct eye movements performed in sequence. Practitioners begin with palming—rubbing hands together to generate heat then gently placing warm palms over closed eyes to relax the eye muscles. This is followed by a series of coordinated eye movements: looking up and down side to side diagonally and in clockwise and counterclockwise circles.

Another component involves trataka (steady gazing) where practitioners focus on a single point—often a candle flame—without blinking for as long as comfortable followed by closing the eyes and observing the afterimage. This develops concentration while strengthening eye muscles.

Distance viewing exercises alternate between focusing on near and far objects which helps maintain the eye’s natural ability to adjust focal length—a function that often diminishes with age and excessive close-up work.

Regular practice of Netra Vyayamam is said to improve blood circulation to the eyes reduce strain-related headaches sharpen focus and potentially slow age-related vision changes. Many practitioners report improved capacity to read for extended periods decreased computer-related eye fatigue and enhanced peripheral vision. Beyond physical benefits these exercises foster greater visual mindfulness—a heightened awareness of what and how we see that complements other aspects of yogic attention training.
