Open Twist

Open Twists are a category of spinal rotations in yoga where the chest remains expanded and the front body stays relatively open during the twisting action. These postures contrast with closed twists where the body folds forward while rotating. Open twists combine spinal mobility with chest expansion creating a multidimensional stretch that affects multiple body systems.

Examples of open twists include:

• Revolved Chair Pose (Parivrtta Utkatasana)
• Revolved Side Angle Pose (Parivrtta Parsvakonasana)
• Revolved Warrior (Parivrtta Virabhadrasana)
• Seated Spinal Twist with upright torso (Bharadvajasana variations)
• Supine Twists with arms extended (Jathara Parivartanasana variations)

These poses offer numerous benefits:

• Stimulate digestive organs through gentle compression and release
• Maintain spinal mobility and health
• Open the chest and shoulders improving respiratory capacity
• Create balance between opposing muscle groups
• Stimulate circulation to intervertebral discs
• Release tension in the back and intercostal muscles
• Provide a gentle massage to internal organs

The biomechanics of open twists involve initiating movement from the core while maintaining length in the spine. The lower body provides stability while the upper body rotates creating a dynamic relationship between stability and mobility. Breath plays a crucial role expanding the chest on inhalation and facilitating deeper rotation on exhalation.

Open twists can be particularly therapeutic for those with rounded shoulders poor posture or restricted breathing patterns. They counteract the effects of prolonged sitting and forward-focused activities by expanding the front body while simultaneously addressing spinal stiffness.
