Sadhana

Sadhana refers to any spiritual practice that is undertaken with discipline and dedication toward a specific spiritual goal. In yoga philosophy sadhana encompasses all techniques and practices that lead to self-realization and spiritual growth including asana pranayama meditation mantra repetition service and self-study.

The term comes from the Sanskrit root ‘sadh’ meaning ‘to accomplish’ or ‘to achieve’ signifying that sadhana is the means through which one achieves their spiritual objectives. A complete sadhana typically integrates physical mental and spiritual disciplines creating a holistic approach to spiritual evolution.

Traditional texts often recommend that sadhana be practiced consistently usually daily and at specific times—particularly during the brahma muhurta the pre-dawn hours considered most conducive to spiritual practice. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika Yoga Sutras and other classical texts outline various sadhanas appropriate for different temperaments and stages of development.

Many modern yoga teachers emphasize that finding one’s personal sadhana—practices that resonate deeply with the individual—is essential for sustainable spiritual growth. Rather than following practices prescribed by others discovering and refining one’s own sadhana becomes a journey of self-discovery.
