Viloma Pranayama

Viloma Pranayama (विलोम प्राणायाम) is an advanced breathing technique in yoga that involves interrupted or ‘against the grain’ breathing. The name derives from ‘vi’ meaning ‘against’ and ‘loma’ meaning ‘hair’ suggesting breath that moves against its natural flow.

Unlike continuous breathing patterns Viloma involves deliberately pausing during either inhalation (Viloma 1) or exhalation (Viloma 2) creating distinct segments within a single breath cycle. These intentional pauses increase lung capacity strengthen respiratory muscles and enhance breath awareness.

In Viloma 1 practitioners inhale incrementally filling the lungs in stages with brief pauses between each segment. Starting from the lower abdomen progressing to the mid-chest and finally the upper chest each section fills before proceeding to the next. This segmented approach increases inhalation capacity and brings awareness to different regions of the respiratory system.

Viloma 2 reverses this process with segmented exhalation releasing breath in stages with pauses between each segment. This technique strengthens exhalation muscles develops breath control and promotes deeper relaxation.

From an energetic perspective Viloma Pranayama efficiently distributes prana (life force) throughout the body’s subtle energy channels. The interrupted breathing pattern breaks habitual respiratory patterns allowing for deeper energetic cleansing and revitalization.

Regular practice of Viloma Pranayama provides numerous benefits including reduced anxiety improved concentration enhanced respiratory function greater lung capacity and a profound sense of mental clarity. It serves as an excellent preparation for meditation by calming the mind and creating heightened awareness of subtle bodily processes.
